About the position

The Mechanical Structural Engineer (MSE) at Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co. is tasked with researching, developing, designing, and validating mechanical and structural components specifically for mining equipment. This role is critical in ensuring that the products developed not only meet the required cost targets but also adhere to technical specifications and are completed within the projected timelines. The MSE will engage in a variety of responsibilities that span from assisting design drafters in creating structural designs using Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) software to working collaboratively with engineers to specify the type and size of structural members. In this position, the MSE will be responsible for researching, designing, installing, validating, analyzing, and maintaining various components of structural and mechanical systems. This includes machined parts, castings, and welded fabrications, all while applying a solid understanding of engineering principles. The role requires the ability to compute and estimate loadings on structural members and to work both independently and as part of a team with other engineers, designers, and production personnel. Interaction with customers and suppliers is also a key aspect of the job, ensuring that all parties are aligned on project goals and specifications. As the MSE progresses through the ranks, responsibilities will expand to include conferring with engineers to implement operating procedures, resolving structural problems, and providing technical information. The role will also involve specifying material requirements, investigating structural and mechanical failures, and providing feedback to engineers on customer needs related to structural components. Senior positions will require mentoring junior engineers, planning multiple projects in parallel, and representing the company in diverse situations. Overall, the Mechanical Structural Engineer plays a vital role in the design and validation of mining equipment, ensuring that all components meet the highest standards of quality and performance.
