About the position

The Mechanical/Tech Drafter at Vuzix Corporation is responsible for creating mechanical drawings and documentation to support the mechanical engineering team in the design and development of advanced near-eye imaging hardware. This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective product development and production, focusing on rapid prototyping and testing of innovative products such as smart glasses and augmented reality technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Create mechanical drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation using SolidWorks and Office Products.
  • Analyze the tolerance stack up of complicated miniature assemblies and provide feedback into the design process.
  • Assemble and test prototypes and mock-ups using 3D printing and other rapid prototyping techniques.
  • Design experiments and conduct testing with molded prototypes and early production products.
  • Collaborate with Optical and Manufacturing Engineering on documentation, fixture design, testing, and assembly pilots.
  • Design and modify mechanical portions of existing and future products using SolidWorks CAD software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or an Associate's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient with 3D CAD modeling and drawings.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of detailed experience working in a product design environment.
  • Experience with complex, tight tolerance mechanical designs.
  • General understanding of tolerancing and GD&T concepts.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Thorough understanding of tolerancing and GD&T concepts.
  • Proficient with 3D CAD modeling and drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Experience with design and tolerancing relating to DFMA.
  • Prototyping and light fabrication skills including 3D printing, milling, drilling, sanding, filing, and fitting of small components.
  • Understanding of various fabrication methods, particularly injection molding.
  • Opto-mechanical experience is a bonus.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM.
