About the position

Air Squared Manufacturing, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer I to join our team in Thornton, Colorado. This full-time, exempt position offers a competitive salary ranging from $75,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. As a leading designer and manufacturer of scroll type compressors and vacuum pumps, we cater to various industries including medical, automotive, aerospace, fuel cell, and power generation. Our focus is on innovative applications that require unique solutions, and we pride ourselves on our ability to work closely with customers to design customized solutions that meet their specific needs. In this role, you will be responsible for testing new scroll compressors and vacuum pump designs. The ideal candidate will be driven, organized, hands-on, and possess strong attention to detail. You will engage in various engineering specialties, including heat transfer, thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, dynamics and statics, and fluid dynamics, to ensure the reliability and performance of our products. Your work will involve developing and fabricating test stands, selecting and installing test equipment, conducting performance testing, and utilizing LabVIEW for data acquisition and analysis. This position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience, along with 1-2 years of professional experience in a related field. You will be expected to demonstrate your engineering capabilities through independent projects or relevant work experience. The role also emphasizes the importance of soft skills such as analytical thinking, strong communication, attention to detail, teamwork, and adaptability to new technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive performance testing of scroll compressor prototypes, diagnose issues, and recommend solutions.
  • Develop and fabricate test stands specifically designed for evaluating scroll compressor performance.
  • Select and install appropriate test equipment (pressure transducers, flow meters, temperature sensors, etc.) and ensure proper installation for accurate data collection.
  • Program and utilize LabVIEW to automate data acquisition from test equipment and analyze scroll compressor performance metrics.
  • Perform other duties related to scroll compressor testing as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience with a proven track record in testing.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience in a related field, or independent projects that demonstrate engineering capability.
  • U.S. Citizenship (or ability to legally work in the US).

Nice-to-haves

  • Background in programming (Python, Ladder Logic, EES, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience such as wiring, soldering, fabrication, or mechanical repairs.
  • Experience using LabVIEW for data acquisition and analysis.
  • Demonstrated skill for troubleshooting using instruments such as thermal imager, DMM, oscilloscope, etc.
  • Demonstrated capability for independent projects.
  • Experience designing, troubleshooting, or maintaining electronic systems.
  • Capabilities in advanced measurements such as vibrational analysis, advanced use of oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Background in automotive product development or management.
  • Proficiency in using a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, such as SolidWorks or similar program, to understand and interpret test stand designs.
  • Familiarity with Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.
