About the position

The Medication Aide (also known as AMAP in West Virginia) plays a crucial role in providing quality care and assistance with daily living activities for residents in the community. This position is centered around ensuring that residents receive their prescribed medications within the established scope of practice while promoting their independence and participation in community activities. The Medication Aide is responsible for creating a meaningful experience for all residents, which includes ensuring a pleasant dining experience and representing the community positively at all times. In this role, the Medication Aide assists with the administration of medications, maintains a thorough understanding of all relevant policies and procedures, and supports residents with their daily living activities. The aide is also tasked with reporting any incidents or care concerns to the appropriate personnel, performing housekeeping duties, and responding promptly to resident calls for assistance or emergency alerts. Additionally, the aide helps plan and conduct activity programs for residents, ensuring their engagement and well-being. The Medication Aide must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, documenting resident status and any changes in their care. They are also responsible for maintaining the medication cart, conducting audits, and ensuring compliance with medication administration protocols. This position requires a compassionate individual who can provide emotional support to new residents during their transition into the community and who is committed to ongoing training and development in medication administration practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the administration of prescribed medications within the established scope of practice.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all policies and procedures pertaining to the position.
  • Assists residents with activities of daily living.
  • Reports incidents involving residents to appropriate individuals (e.g., HCC, RN/LPN, or ED).
  • Performs housekeeping duties, such as making resident beds and cleaning resident apartments and common areas as directed by supervisor.
  • Responds promptly to all resident calls for assistance or emergency alerts.
  • Assists in planning and conducting activity programs for residents.
  • Follows confidentiality policies regarding the release of resident information.
  • Assists residents to and from the dining room and activities.
  • Checks on residents, ensuring attendance at meals and activities.
  • Checks on residents who are ill and reports status or concerns to appropriate individuals.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing to report resident status, community information, resident appointments, admissions, and transfers.
  • Assists new residents with move-in transition, providing emotional support.
  • Attends all medication trainings scheduled.
  • Completes medication cart audits as assigned and maintains the medication cart as directed.
  • Passes all medication administration observations.
  • Communicates all medication resident needs to the HCC and documents in the Daily Log.
  • Re-orders medications, faxes to pharmacy, and communicates with resident family/RP as needed with changes, reporting in Daily Log.
  • Documents all medication administration on the EMAR/MAR, reporting all exceptions to the HCC and documenting on EMAR and Daily Log.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have successfully passed the written examination and possess a current Medication Aide Certification, in good standing, per verification of listing-North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation/Adult Care Licensure Section.
  • Must have worked as a medication aide during the previous 24 months in an adult care home as verified on the Facility Medication Aide Verification form, DSHR/AC 4664.
  • Must have successfully completed the clinical skills validation portion of the competency evaluation prior to administration or supervision of administration of medication as documented on the NC Medication Administration Skills Validation Form, DHSR/AC 4605.
  • Shall complete 6 hours annually of in-service training that shall include but not be limited to safe practices for injections and any other procedures during which bleeding typically occurs, glucose monitoring, and 3 hours of the state-specific infection control training.
  • Must satisfactorily pass 2 medication observations annually.
  • Must satisfactorily pass all medication cart audits assigned.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Must be organized and able to work well with all levels of personnel.
  • Must be a contributing member of the nursing team and follow the instruction of the supervisor.
  • Must be polite and considerate of residents, visitors, and co-workers at all times.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, and push or carry 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to safely lift and transfer residents while maintaining proper body mechanics.
  • Must be in designated uniform during working hours, to include name badge and a smile.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified, or be willing to become certified within 60 days of hire.
  • Must be able to represent the community in a positive and professional manner.
  • Must attend and complete all required in-services and staff meetings.
  • Must be able to remain calm and competent during emergencies.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays.
