About the position

The Media Communications Specialist will play a crucial role in developing, planning, executing, maintaining, and measuring the effectiveness of the Institute's comprehensive communications strategy. This position is designed to enhance visibility, awareness, and engagement with the Institute's research, events, and staff through various platforms, including print and digital media, social media, newsletters, and the official website. The Specialist will be responsible for translating complex research into accessible content for lay audiences, ensuring that high-quality content reflects the Institute's scientific rigor. In addition to content creation, the Specialist will manage the administration and content of the website, ensuring it remains up-to-date and engaging. Building and maintaining relationships with collaborators and key stakeholders is also a critical aspect of this role. The Specialist will assist the Communications Director with various projects as needed, contributing to the overall success of the communications team. This position requires a proactive approach to communication and a strong ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining enthusiasm and creativity in all tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the Institute's comprehensive communications strategy.
  • Increase visibility and engagement through various media platforms.
  • Translate complex research into accessible content for lay audiences.
  • Create high-quality content that showcases the Institute's scientific rigor.
  • Administer and manage the content of the website.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with collaborators and key stakeholders.
  • Assist the Communications Director with various projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-3 years relevant work experience in communications, public relations, or media, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working on a variety of social media platforms.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Interest in the social and legal issues impacting the LGBT community.
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior-level staff on complex projects.
  • Strong reading comprehension and ability to translate complex research for broad audiences.
  • Superb editing and proofreading skills, with attention to detail in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team structure.
  • Versatility and flexibility to work creatively within changing priorities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Experience with website content management systems, such as WordPress or Drupal.
