About the position

The Media & Public Relations Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing the marketing and communications strategy for the International African American Museum. This role involves building relationships with local stakeholders, managing community engagement initiatives, and enhancing the museum's public perception through strategic messaging and outreach efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute community engagement plans for special exhibitions, program series, and events.
  • Work with IAAM leadership to improve the public's perception of the museum.
  • Develop and disseminate strategic messaging on the museum's mission and impact.
  • Write and distribute stories that highlight the African American journey in the U.S.
  • Create an annual plan and editorial calendar for local, national, and international groups.
  • Develop and implement a regular speakers' series based on museum exhibits.
  • Coordinate with IAAM's volunteer team for community outreach and events.
  • Partner with the CVB for press and event planner fam trips to boost visibility.
  • Spotlight the museum as a venue for local events, conventions, and meetings.
  • Develop an annual institutional marketing calendar to heighten organizational visibility.
  • Incorporate marketing calendar priorities into communications plans.
  • Develop an annual communications plan to drive awareness and engagement with the museum.
  • Shape public perception through strategies and messaging that honor the African American journey.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Marketing Officer and other departments to develop targeted messaging.
  • Support the Marketing department at all major museum events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant marketing and communications experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an organization's brand and editorial strategy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment.
