About the position

The Media Relations and Communications Coordinator at the Denver Art Museum plays a vital role in supporting the communications team by proactively communicating the museum's exhibitions, collections, and programs through effective media relations strategies and tactics. This position serves as a key point of contact for media representatives on-site, ensuring that the museum's messaging is clear, accurate, and engaging. The coordinator will collaborate closely with the Marketing and Communications Department, as well as cross-departmental teams, to enhance the visibility of the museum's offerings and maintain the integrity of information shared with key audiences. In this role, the coordinator will be responsible for developing annual strategies and tactics in conjunction with the communications team. This includes coordinating and implementing media relations tactics that align with both departmental and institutional objectives. The coordinator will produce various media materials for exhibitions and programs, such as media releases, media kits, advisories, and biographies, ensuring that all content is compelling and informative. Additionally, the coordinator will work with all museum departments to brainstorm and pitch creative story ideas that highlight the museum's collections, programs, and events. The position also involves staffing and coordinating media-related events at the museum, including media previews and staff interviews, as well as managing and refining the museum's media lists. The coordinator will be responsible for coordinating image rights for media outreach and will assist with issues management and crisis preparedness as needed. Regular tracking and monitoring of media efforts will be essential, along with assisting the Senior Manager of Public Relations and Communications with meeting coordination. The coordinator will also be expected to attend occasional museum events outside of standard office hours, all while consistently applying a Racial Equity Lens in daily operations and supporting the museum's Racial Equity Roadmap initiatives through yearly goal setting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop annual strategies and tactics in collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Coordinate and implement media relations tactics aligned with departmental and institutional objectives.
  • Produce media materials for exhibitions and programs, including media releases, media kits, advisories, and biographies.
  • Collaborate with museum departments to develop and pitch creative story ideas about collections, programs, and events.
  • Staff and coordinate media-related events at the museum, such as media previews and staff interviews.
  • Manage and refine the museum's media lists.
  • Coordinate image rights for media relations outreach needs.
  • Work regularly with cross-departmental teams, including Learning & Engagement, Curatorial, Conservation, and Development.
  • Assist with issues management and crisis preparedness efforts as needed.
  • Track and monitor media efforts for the museum and assist with departmental reporting.
  • Assist the Senior Manager of Public Relations and Communications with meeting coordination as requested.
  • Attend occasional museum events outside of standard office hours.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, or a relevant field preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in public relations with a focus on media relations.
  • Experience working with the news media.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to produce fast, accurate, and engaging copy.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills with attention to detail.
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to meet deadlines while managing diverse responsibilities.
  • Ability to anticipate needs and think ahead without needing instructions.
  • Team-player attitude with a willingness to contribute positively to the team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in Spanish for a language differential.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
