About the position

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Media Relations Specialist to enhance external communications and promote the university's strategic priorities. This role involves crafting compelling narratives about medical and scientific innovations, managing media relations, and executing social media strategies to engage various audiences. The position is crucial for supporting the university's mission in education, research, and patient care, requiring strong communication and creative skills.

Responsibilities

  • Identify media opportunities and pitch story ideas to key experts.
  • Respond to breaking news media requests on tight deadlines.
  • Arrange interviews with subject matter experts and media, escorting them on campus.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and partners to communicate strategic news.
  • Assist with social media strategy and execution for university platforms.
  • Create and supply photos and video content for social media and media requests.
  • Write news releases and pitches about medical and scientific discoveries.
  • Post news content on UTHealth Houston's website and correct broken links.
  • Track and tag media relations activities using online news monitoring services.
  • Write content for Media Relations newsletter to leadership and staff.
  • Guard UTHealth Houston's interests and patient confidentiality.
  • Staff the media hotline and serve on the emergency communications team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including interviewing skills.
  • Knowledge of AP Style and Microsoft Word/Outlook.
  • Experience with Content Management Systems and social media writing.
  • Ability to identify news and multitask under deadlines.
