About the position

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Media Relations Specialist to enhance its external communications and public relations efforts. This role involves crafting compelling narratives about medical and scientific innovations, managing media relations, and executing social media strategies to engage both internal and external audiences. The specialist will play a crucial role in promoting the university's mission of education, research, and patient care while protecting its brand and reputation.

Responsibilities

  • Identify media opportunities and pitch story ideas to key experts.
  • Respond to breaking news media requests on tight deadlines.
  • Arrange interviews with subject matter experts and media representatives.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to communicate strategic news.
  • Assist in social media strategy and execution for university platforms.
  • Create and supply photos and video content for social media and media requests.
  • Write news releases and pitches about medical and scientific discoveries.
  • Post news content on the university's website and manage broken links.
  • Track and report media relations activities using online monitoring services.
  • Write content for the Media Relations newsletter for leadership and staff.
  • Serve as a first responder on the emergency communications team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in public relations, communications, or writing/editing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of AP Style and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with content management systems and social media management.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize deadlines.

Nice-to-haves
