About the position

The Media Specialist (Instructional Designer) at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is responsible for supporting faculty in the design, development, and maintenance of courses that enhance the educational experience. This role involves planning and conducting workshops on instructional technology, providing one-on-one training, and serving as the primary support contact for the Lamakū Learning Management System. The position aims to improve instructional consistency and student learning through effective use of technology and multimedia methods.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to faculty in course design and development to meet learning goals.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct workshops on instructional technology tools and media.
  • Assist faculty in implementing multimedia instructional methods and technology.
  • Provide instructional technology support services and interactive strategies.
  • Deliver tailored one-on-one training for faculty and staff in instructional technology.
  • Serve as the primary support contact for the Lamakū Learning Management System.
  • Coach and advise faculty on developing online courses to meet quality standards.
  • Provide Turn-Key course development services for faculty.
  • Research and develop custom hardware and software solutions for faculty use.
  • Collect and analyze data, craft reports, and publish campus communications.
  • Research instructional trends and technologies.
  • Supervise other APT staff and student workers.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in Education Technology, Instructional Design, or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in educational technology or instructional design.
  • Functional knowledge of principles and practices in Educational and Instructional Technology.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using creative reasoning and logic.
  • Demonstrated ability to present information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and word processing software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Education with emphasis in Educational Technology or related fields.
  • Experience in a distance learning environment supporting faculty.
  • More than five years of post-baccalaureate experience in higher education.
  • Teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience designing in a Learning Management System, especially Brightspace.
  • Experience with ADA/accessibility standards in instructional materials.
