About the position

The Media Specialist (Instructional Designer) at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo is responsible for supporting faculty in the design, development, and maintenance of courses that enhance educational experiences. This role involves planning and conducting workshops on instructional technology, providing one-on-one training, and serving as the primary support contact for the Lamaku Learning Management System. The position aims to improve instructional consistency and student learning through multimedia instructional methods and technology integration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to faculty in the design, development, and maintenance of courses that meet program and course learning goals.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct workshops focusing on instructional technology tools, media, and instructional design for faculty development.
  • Work with faculty and professional staff to develop and implement multimedia instructional methods and technology.
  • Assist faculty in effectively using instructional technology by providing support services and implementing interactive strategies.
  • Provide one-on-one training tailored to the specific needs of faculty/staff in instructional technology programs.
  • Serve as the primary campus support contact for the Lamaku Learning Management System, providing technical support and consulting on instructional design.
  • Coach, advise, and teach faculty how to develop and improve their online courses to meet UH's Quality Online Standards.
  • Provide Turn-Key course development services for faculty requiring assistance in Lamaku course development.
  • Research and develop custom hardware and software solutions for faculty use in instruction.
  • Collect and analyze data, craft written documents and reports, and develop campus communications.
  • Research and keep current on instructional trends and technologies.
  • Coach, direct, and supervise other APT staff and student workers.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education Technology, Instructional Design, Learning Design and Technology or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in education, educational technology, instructional design, or related areas.
  • Functional working knowledge of principles and practices in Educational and/or Instructional Technology and distance education.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using creative reasoning and logic.
  • Ability to interpret and present information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, ability to lead subordinates and manage work priorities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in Educational and/or Instructional Technology.
  • More than two years of experience in a distance learning environment supporting faculty.
  • More than five years of post-baccalaureate experience in a higher education setting.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Experience designing in a Learning Management System, especially Brightspace.
  • Experience designing courses in various content areas.
  • Experience with Mac, PCs, and mobile devices.
  • Experience with designing instructional materials to meet ADA/accessibility standards.
