About the position

The Medical Assistant at UPMC Shadyside's Consolidated Outpatient Testing Center plays a crucial role in supporting patient care and satisfaction. This position involves a variety of clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks aimed at enhancing the patient experience. The Medical Assistant will primarily focus on drawing labs and performing EKGs, with comprehensive training provided for these tasks. Flexible shifts are available, ensuring no evening or weekend work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Prepare patient rooms and set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and restock exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms.
  • Collect patient information/history, take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures.
  • Document patient information into the medical record.
  • Administer injectable medication and vaccines under the direction of a physician when appropriate.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Phlebotomy experience is a plus.
