About the position

The Medical Assistant at UPMC Family Care Silver Spring plays a crucial role in supporting physicians and ensuring patient satisfaction through various clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. This full-time position operates on a Monday to Friday schedule, with no weekends or holidays, and offers a structured work environment focused on patient care and administrative support.

Responsibilities

  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room and assist as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, and preparing for exams.
  • Collect patient information/history, take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients and families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete forms and requisitions as needed.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare patient rooms and set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and restock exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure, including phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and administer injectable medication and vaccines under supervision.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies and maintain confidentiality related to medical records.
  • Perform other front office responsibilities as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are required.
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) or certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) is required for Senior Medical Assistant position.
  • At least 1 year of patient care experience is required for Senior Medical Assistant position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred.
