About the position

The Medical Assistant I position at GI Alliance is a per diem role that involves both clinical and administrative responsibilities. The primary purpose of this role is to assist physicians with patient care while also managing clerical tasks to ensure smooth operations within the medical facility. The position requires a blend of patient interaction, medical assistance, and organizational skills to support the healthcare team effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfills patient care responsibilities including checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
  • Accompanies patients to exam/procedure rooms and assists with walking transfers, dressing, and collecting specimens.
  • Collects patient history and checks vital signs, performing screenings as per provider guidelines.
  • Assists providers as needed, including charting, phone triage, and medication administration.
  • Relays instructions to patients and families, answers calls, and provides pertinent information.
  • Handles clerical responsibilities such as sending/receiving patient medical records and obtaining lab/X-ray reports.
  • Completes forms and requisitions, schedules appointments, and manages patient check-in and check-out.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and patient demographics, ensuring charts are complete and filed appropriately.
  • Respects and promotes patient rights and responds appropriately to emergency codes.
  • Shares problems relating to patients and/or staff with the immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a college course in medical assisting.
  • Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant or documented evidence of externship in a medical office.
  • Experience in a Gastroenterology practice is preferred.
  • Knowledge of healthcare field and EMR systems.
  • Skill in performing medical assistance tasks appropriately and in written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care practices and procedures.
