The Medical Assistant I position at Baylor College of Medicine involves supporting clinicians in providing primary care services to patients. Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and administering tests like EKGs.
  • Answers clinic telephones and resolves issues or routes calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation.
  • Correctly collects and labels patient specimens for lab analysis.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Schedules patient tests and appointments and prepares patient charts.
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post-visit follow-ups.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and orders new supplies and equipment.
  • Sorts clinic mail and files patient medical records.
  • Performs other duties as specified, including floating to other FCM clinic locations.
  • Educates patients about their conditions and self-care.
  • Assists providers in filling out health-related paperwork for patients.
  • Staffs central college sites (e.g., COVID testing site) as needed.
  • Cross trains to gain proficiency in staffing Comm Center, monitors inventory, and converts visits to virtual appointments.
  • Monitors assigned provider baskets, completes high-priority messages, and addresses incoming patient encounters.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA). New employees who are not currently certified must obtain certification within six months of employment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
