About the position

The Medical Assistant I at Variety Care plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare providers by assisting with patient examinations, treatments, and maintaining an efficient clinic flow. This entry-level position requires strong communication skills and the ability to handle various clinical tasks while ensuring patient care and safety standards are met.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and welcomes patients.
  • Escorts patients to the appropriate location for pre-examination information gathering.
  • Inquires about self-referrals, recent ER visits, or hospitalizations and documents information in the EMR.
  • Measures and records patient-specific information such as height, weight, and vital signs.
  • Accurately records all measurements and information in the patient's EMR.
  • Documents the patient's stated chief complaint in EMR.
  • Administers medications and injections under provider's direction and documents in EMR.
  • Reviews assigned Telephone Encounters within the EMR in a timely manner.
  • Administers immunizations under Provider's direction and updates vaccine information in the EMR.
  • Prepares and restocks supplies in examination rooms daily.
  • Assists providers in physical exams and procedures as directed.
  • Participates in training programs to improve patient care.
  • Addresses the needs of patients and families considering cultural sensitivity.
  • Disposes of contaminated items according to policy and follows safety regulations.
  • Coordinates with referral clerks to arrange referrals outside of Variety Care.
  • Communicates with community organizations and specialists to obtain test and referral results.
  • Responsible for conveying high priority results to Provider.
  • Assists with medical emergencies as directed by Provider.
  • Supports patient education in line with provider's recommendations.
  • Occasionally travels to other Variety Care health centers for back-up coverage.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to obtain and record accurate information.
  • Willingness to learn electronic medical records software.
  • Intermediate computer skills including data entry and typing.
  • Ability to perform tasks, administer medications and injections as directed within 90 days.
  • Experience communicating with the patient population.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.

Nice-to-haves

  • Medical Assistant Certificate or LPN License.
  • Previous experience in a medical assistant role may be considered in lieu of a certificate/license.
  • Previous clinic or primary practice experience.
