About the position

The Medical Assistant II role at Brigham & Women's Hospital supports healthcare teams by providing both clinical and non-clinical patient services under the direction of healthcare providers. This position involves direct patient interaction, assisting with vital signs, documenting patient information, scheduling appointments, and managing patient flow to ensure efficient care delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Assist junior Medical Assistants with day-to-day questions and responsibilities, facilitating their learning through onboarding training.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare necessary equipment for healthcare providers.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height, recording information in the patients' medical records.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients, organizing educational materials to reinforce patient education.
  • Perform general office duties, such as answering phones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms, while acting as a liaison with other departments and advocating for patients.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log them, and prepare them for testing; perform phlebotomy if competence is demonstrated.
  • Maintain inventory of immunizations and check expiration dates, providing immunizations as applicable.
  • Responsible for improving departmental quality initiatives, such as two patient identifiers and hand hygiene.
  • Comply with all policies and standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.
  • 1 year of direct Medical Assistant experience or medical field work required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification preferred.
  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical office software.
