About the position

As a Medical Assistant II at the Glendale OBGYN Keck Medical Center of USC, the incumbent will play a vital role in supporting medical care providers within an outpatient clinic setting. This position encompasses a variety of clinical and administrative responsibilities aimed at ensuring efficient patient care and smooth operations within the clinic. The Medical Assistant II will be responsible for rooming patients, setting up necessary equipment and instruments, and assisting providers during examinations and procedures. Additionally, the role involves cleaning and stocking exam rooms, as well as maintaining accurate documentation in electronic patient charts. Patient care duties include recording systemic histories, obtaining vital signs, performing diagnostics, and preparing for minor procedures. The Medical Assistant will also assist with administrative tasks such as making patient follow-up calls, managing prescription refills, preparing the clinic for patient visits, scheduling appointments, and verifying insurance information. The incumbent is expected to facilitate patient flow, ensuring that providers can see patients efficiently while also providing some patient education. Daily interactions with staff, supervisors, and physicians are essential, along with periodic meetings with departmental leaders to discuss workflow and patient care strategies. The Medical Assistant II will be expected to work with minimal supervision, with regular progress checks to evaluate workload and performance. This role requires a proactive approach to patient care and administrative duties, ensuring that all tasks are performed in compliance with safety policies and regulations. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining confidentiality regarding all patient and organizational information, thereby upholding the integrity of the clinic's operations.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and prepare them for examination by obtaining vital signs and medical histories.
  • Assist providers during examinations and minor procedures by setting up instruments and medications.
  • Clean and stock exam rooms, ensuring they are ready for patient use.
  • Document and update patient medical histories and other relevant information in electronic medical records.
  • Perform necessary tests and screenings as ordered by providers, including blood draws and immunizations.
  • Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, managing patient follow-ups, and processing prescription refills.
  • Verify insurance information and assist patients with billing inquiries.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies for patient examination rooms, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients and medical staff, addressing questions and coordinating care.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to team discussions regarding patient care and clinic operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma program.
  • 1 year of experience in an outpatient or ambulatory clinic setting.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Ability to analyze clinical and administrative information to resolve conflicts and discrepancies.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of medical billing and insurance verification processes.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
