About the position

The Medical Assistant II position at Baylor College of Medicine's Ambulatory Operations Team involves delivering high-level patient care in a fast-paced ambulatory care setting. This role includes performing routine patient care responsibilities, conducting specific in-suite testing procedures, and providing clerical and administrative support. The Medical Assistant II is also responsible for guiding other Medical Assistants and maintaining professionalism while working with executive and concierge patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, collecting specimens, and conducting point-of-care tests (POCTs).
  • Conduct comprehensive testing including routine EKGs, placing heart monitors, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), ankle-brachial index (ABI) tests, cognitive testing, and 24-hour pressure monitoring.
  • Note primary complaints and reasons for patient visits.
  • Collect patient history, perform medication reconciliation, update vaccine status, and enter information in the electronic medical record.
  • Set up instruments and equipment for physicians.
  • Assist with procedures as needed.
  • Administer medication under the direction of a supervising physician.
  • Instruct patients on general care and medical procedures.
  • Maintain patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Schedule patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  • Conduct patient outreach phone calls and post-visit follow-ups.
  • Perform clerical and administrative responsibilities such as filing and scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, and referral information.
  • Work with insurance companies on prior authorizations.
  • Take inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed.
  • Assist with training and orienting new medical assistant staff.
  • Deliver staff education, clinical in-services, and participate in clinical staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Support the clinic's compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and clinical champion for areas of expertise within the specialty.
  • Conduct performance improvement activities that support the clinic's goals for quality, patient experience, patient safety, and efficiency.
  • Sort and distribute clinic mail and medical records to appropriate personnel.
  • Receive training to schedule and operate the Dexa machine for Bone Mineral Density Studies and Dexa fit analysis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • Strong customer service skills.
