About the position

The Medical Assistant III in Anesthesiology - Pain Medicine at UTHealth Houston plays a crucial role in supporting the clinical team to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care. This position involves a variety of responsibilities including patient preparation, rooming patients, performing clinical procedures, and ensuring a high level of customer service and satisfaction. The role is integral to the smooth operation of the clinic and requires a commitment to quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality patient care and customer service/satisfaction.
  • Effectively participate in planning and preparing for patient visits ensuring appropriate schedules, test results, and clinic specific requirements are available.
  • Room patients consistent with clinic needs while determining and documenting chief complaint and reason for visit, vital signs, medication list, allergies, smoking history and other information as required by clinic.
  • Perform appropriate hearing and vision testing, EKG, spirometry, point of care testing, specimen collection, equipment cleaning/reprocessing and other requested procedures as required and competency validated.
  • Prepare and stock rooms (daily/weekly) and clinic supplies in advance of clinic visit as well as cleaning rooms appropriately between patients.
  • Prepare for and assist with routine and specialty procedures.
  • Schedule patients for follow up appointments or referrals and perform routine clerical duties for team and staff to include photocopying, scanning and faxing.
  • Perform telephone messaging and in person screening with appropriate follow up.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Respect and maintain privacy and confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program OR one (1) year of experience (in addition to the three (3) years of experience required to meet the experience requirement) AND certification may be substituted for Medical Assistant training program.
  • Three years of experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA) may be required.
