About the position

The Medical Assistant position is designed to support the efficient operation of a clinical office by performing a variety of clerical and clinical tasks. This role involves assisting physicians with patient examinations and treatments, managing patient flow, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Medical Assistant is crucial in maintaining a professional practice image and facilitating a smooth patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and escort them to examination or procedure rooms.
  • Take vital signs and accurately transcribe results in patient's chart.
  • Update patient history and documentation of tobacco use, allergies, medications, and immunizations.
  • Remove dressings and staples as required, preparing patients for examinations or procedures.
  • Prepare and assist provider with examinations and procedures, including room setup.
  • Obtain necessary signed consent and complete ABN forms when needed.
  • Perform point of care lab testing and patient treatment as ordered by the provider.
  • Report and record results accurately in the medical record.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and procedures.
  • Maintain and re-stock clinical supplies for the back office.
  • Organize and keep a running inventory of medications in med rooms and refrigerator.
  • Maintain daily logs of refrigerator temperatures and perform quality controls.
  • Clean and scrub down rooms and countertops nightly and as necessary.
  • Prepare and clean non-disposable equipment/instruments for sterilization.
  • Review charts for next day appointments and check for pending lab or diagnostic test results.
  • Complete physician orders for ancillary tests, surgeries, or specialist referrals as directed.
  • Obtain necessary insurance authorizations.
  • Document all pertinent patient information into the electronic medical record.
  • Travel to other IHPS offices when needed to cover clinical/clerical duties.
  • Perform any other services deemed reasonable by physician or practice manager.
  • Schedule and manage appointments.
  • Update patient information including change of address, phone numbers, and insurance.
  • Verify medical insurance eligibility on each patient prior to or upon check-in.
  • Collect co-pays and payments from patients, providing receipts and maintaining payment logs.
  • Review charges on encounter forms for accuracy and enter them into the computer system.
  • Retrieve messages from answering service and answer telephone calls promptly.
  • Document pertinent information in patient's medical record and maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Completion of accredited medical assistant program or at least two years of experience in a medical environment.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of basic medical front and back office procedures and medical terminology.
  • Familiarity with first aid measures and clinical laboratory methods.
  • Understanding of OSHA rules and regulations and patient confidentiality regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic health record systems.
  • Ability to perform simple routine clinical laboratory methods.
  • Knowledge of insurance authorizations and billing processes.
