About the position

The Medical Assistant (MA) position at Northwell Health is a vital role that involves performing patient care under the direct supervision of physicians and nurses. The MA is responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the smooth operation of the healthcare facility and the well-being of patients. This includes preparing patients for examinations, administering and recording diagnostic laboratory test results, and assisting in the coordination of care to meet patient needs. The MA will also be involved in organizing and filing reports into the medical record, ensuring that all necessary documentation is accurate and up-to-date. In this role, the MA collaborates closely with members of the healthcare team to implement patient care plans. This may involve recording the reason for a patient's visit and related information for practitioner review. The MA is expected to perform vital signs, height, weight, and various screening procedures, documenting all findings in the medical record. Additionally, the MA will collect specimens and assist providers in this process, adhering to strict protocols for infection control and specimen handling. The position also requires the MA to perform and document daily controls and calibration of laboratory equipment, ensuring that all equipment is functioning correctly. The MA will assist physicians and nurses with special procedures and examinations, maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring patient comfort throughout the process. Keeping examination rooms orderly and stocked with necessary supplies is another critical responsibility, as is participating in pre-visit chart preparation to ensure that all required lab results and documentation are available for review. Clerical functions are also part of the MA's duties, including filing medical records, processing insurance forms, and managing patient flow within the facility. All responsibilities outlined are considered essential functions of the job, and the MA must be prepared to perform related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with members of the health care team in coordinating and implementing plans for patient care; may record reason for visit and related patient information for practitioner review.
  • Performs vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures which may include, but are not limited to, head circumference, audiometry, and vision testing; documents findings in the medical record.
  • Collects and assists providers in collection of specimens, as required, using appropriate protocols such as infection control; completes requisitions, labels and routes specimens according to standard procedure.
  • Performs and documents daily controls and calibration of laboratory equipment when needed; informs the supervisor of when inaccurate controls are noted.
  • Performs electrocardiograms and phlebotomy in accordance with provider orders; adheres to infection control standards including, but not limited to, hand hygiene, use of PPE, isolation of patient with known infectious disease, and equipment disinfection/sterilization.
  • Assists physicians and nurses with special procedures and examinations including, but not limited to lumbar puncture, pelvic exam, etc. following appropriate protocols such as infection control, universal protocol, and patient identification; secures supplies, ensures patient is properly undressed and draped, provides instruments to physicians, holds patient, as required and assists patient after procedure/examination.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms; stocks assigned rooms and cupboards and ensures par levels of supplies are maintained; checks and completes required logs and equipment including refrigerator logs, eyewash logs, sample medications, AED, suction and other required checks.
  • May participate in pre-visit chart preparation by ensuring required lab results and documentation are available in the medical record for practitioner review (for practices using paper medical records).
  • Performs variety of other clerical functions such as filing of paper medical records, processing insurance forms, preparing financial records, photocopying, answering phones, and assuring efficient flow of patients through the suite, etc. Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Successful completion of Medical Assisting program at an accredited school OR 1-3 years of medical assistant experience, OR 1-3 years of Emergency Medical Technician experience with current NYS DOH EMT certification OR 1-3 years of CNA experience with valid Current Nursing Assistant Certification in New York State, required.
