About the position

The Medical Assistant (MA) in Psychiatry at Mercy Health is a multi-skilled clinical professional responsible for providing both indirect and direct patient care under the direction of a healthcare provider. This role involves completing patient assessments, documenting patient needs, administering medications, and managing patient communications. The MA plays a crucial role in ensuring high standards of care and adherence to legal responsibilities within the medical assisting scope.

Responsibilities

• Provide indirect and direct patient care under the direction of the provider.
• Complete patient assessments including vital signs and documentation of patient/family needs.
• Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider.
• Participate in planning and implementing patient care within the scope of Medical Assisting practice.
• Administer ordered medications and/or vaccines as directed.
• Document accurately in the EMR and manage patient communications through My Chart and in-basket messages.
• Order supplies, track referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests, and dispose of contaminated supplies.

Requirements

• Medical Assisting certification required within 9 months of placement in the MA role.
• BLS Basic Life Support preferred upon hire, required prior to independent patient care.
• High school degree required; vocational/technical degree in medical assisting preferred.
• Enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program required within 30 days of employment.
• One year of healthcare experience or 24 months of clerical physician practice experience preferred.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in a psychiatric setting.
• Additional certifications in medical assisting or related fields.
