About the position

The Medical Assistant position at MMA Station Medical Center is a part-time role that involves a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to support patient care. The Medical Assistant will work up to 30 hours per week, primarily during the day, from Monday to Friday. This role is essential in ensuring smooth patient flow and providing high-quality care in accordance with UPMC Health System policies and procedures. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for checking schedules, organizing patient flow, and accompanying patients to exam and procedure rooms. They will assist patients with various needs, including walking, transfers, dressing, and preparing for exams. Additionally, the Medical Assistant will collect patient information and history, take vital signs, and perform screenings as per provider guidelines. In this role, the Medical Assistant will also handle the sending and receiving of patient medical records while adhering to HIPAA and other regulatory requirements. They will prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment, and maintain cleanliness and infection control standards. The Medical Assistant will manage inventory of supplies and ensure that exam and procedure rooms are restocked appropriately. Compliance with regulatory agencies such as OSHA and CLIA is crucial, as is maintaining confidentiality regarding medical records. The Medical Assistant will perform various clinical tasks, including phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs, and assist physicians with procedures. They will document patient information in medical records and provide patient education as directed. Other responsibilities include obtaining lab and x-ray reports, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage, and managing patient charts. Under the supervision of a physician, the Medical Assistant may also administer injectable medications and vaccines when appropriate. This position requires a commitment to patient care and adherence to UPMC's standards and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to the exam/procedure room.
  • Assist patients with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc.
  • Collect patient information/history; take vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
  • Prepare patient rooms, and set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and document patient information in the medical record.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed and schedule appointments.
  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Administer injectable medication and vaccines under the direction and supervision of a physician.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are necessary.
  • CPR certification based on AHA standards is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal is required.
  • Act 33 with renewal is required.
  • Act 34 with renewal is required.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with Renewal is required.
