About the position

The Medical Assistant in Oncology at UCLA Health plays a crucial role in supporting patient care in an ambulatory setting. This position involves working under the direct supervision of healthcare professionals, assisting in recognizing normal and abnormal signs and symptoms, and providing support during emergencies. The Medical Assistant will perform both administrative and technical supportive services, ensuring a smooth workflow in the clinic.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient care under the supervision of a physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Recognize normal and abnormal signs and symptoms in patients.
  • Provide support during life-threatening emergencies.
  • Perform basic administrative and clerical tasks as needed.
  • Administer CPR and medications as required.
  • Perform venipuncture and skin punctures for blood withdrawal.
  • Obtain accurate vital signs and manage drug refills.
  • Assist in medical emergencies and office procedures.
  • Use computerized patient care systems effectively.
  • Schedule patients for referrals to specialists.
  • Maintain inventory of medical and clinical supplies.

Requirements

  • Medical assistant diploma or certificate from an accredited program.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of normal and abnormal symptomology and life-threatening medical problems.
  • Ability to administer CPR and medications (oral, IM, subcutaneous).
  • Skill in performing venipuncture and obtaining vital signs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and safety requirements for handling biohazardous specimens.
  • Interpersonal and verbal skills for effective communication with patients and staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting as a medical assistant.
  • Familiarity with computerized patient care systems.
  • Ability to assist in the orientation of new staff.
