About the position

The Medical Assistant in Oncology at Henry Ford Health is responsible for providing quality and compassionate care to patients under the direct supervision of the provider and nursing leadership. This full-time role involves a variety of administrative and clinical tasks, including patient greeting, vital sign measurement, medical history documentation, and assisting providers during examinations and procedures. The position emphasizes patient care, diagnostic testing, consultation, quality assurance, and education, ensuring adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial-response screening following protocols approved by supervising provider.
  • Escort patients to the exam room and prepare them for examination, procedure, and treatment.
  • Obtain and record vital signs in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Collect and document patient history using critical thinking skills.
  • Prepare for, set up, and assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as per protocols.
  • Administer and document medications and immunizations as ordered by the supervising provider.
  • Maintain accurate immunization and medication administration records.
  • Document care provided during patient visits in EHR.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies promptly.
  • Monitor and respond to patient requests via telephone and EHR messages.
  • Enter medication, radiology, and lab orders in the EHR for provider sign-off.
  • Discharge patients providing after-visit instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Collect and process specimens and perform CLIA-waived tests.
  • Perform electrocardiography, respiratory, and other testing based on department needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients and medical staff for problems or complaints.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and monitor patient appointments and outpatient procedures.
  • Apply third-party and managed care policies and obtain insurance pre-authorizations.
  • Participate in departmental Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement Programs.
  • Educate patients on health maintenance, disease prevention, and compliance with treatment plans.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills preferred.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of clinical skills related to ambulatory patient care preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills preferred.
  • EPIC (Electronic Medical Record) experience preferred.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with completion of a formal clinical externship (160 hours minimum) or equivalent experience.
  • Current BLS-C certification upon hire or successful completion by end of orientation.
