As a Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Family Medicine at Advocate Health, you will play a crucial role in helping our patients live well. Your primary responsibilities will include preparing and rooming patients for examinations by obtaining vital signs and gathering pertinent health information such as chief complaints, allergies, and medications. You will also monitor and complete Clinical Integration and Quality Improvement measures, notifying clinicians of opportunities within their scope. Performing laboratory procedures, including strep tests, wound cultures, and specimen collections, will be part of your daily tasks, adhering to aseptic techniques and standard infection control guidelines. In addition to these duties, you will assist Physicians and Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) with various procedures, including pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, and colposcopy. Administering routine medications under the orders of Physicians or APCs, which may include immunizations, antibiotics, vitamins, and topical agents, is also a key responsibility. You will follow through with necessary procedure or test requests, manage pre-approved care algorithms, and coordinate new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services. Effective communication with the healthcare team and patients is essential to ensure smooth clinic flow and relay accurate information. You may also perform basic and advanced clinical support tasks based on specialty and competencies, such as removing sutures and staples, conducting laboratory procedures, phlebotomy, EKGs, and spirometry. It is vital to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, understanding the principles of growth and development across the lifespan. This role requires an active LPN license or completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, along with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association, which must be obtained within 45 days unless otherwise determined by the department leader.
