About the position

The Medical Assistant in Primary Care at Memorial Hermann Health System is responsible for assisting healthcare providers in delivering patient care within clinical settings. This role involves performing clinical tasks, administrative duties, and ensuring compliance with healthcare standards while fostering a compassionate and efficient environment for patients and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas.
  • Perform patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes.
  • Maintain compliance with TJC, CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and government standards.
  • Review patient charts prior to appointments to ensure all necessary lab work and diagnostic procedures are completed.
  • Record patient vital signs and reason for visit using Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Direct patients to examination rooms and prepare them for examination.
  • Assist providers during patient examinations and procedures, including surgical and diagnostic tasks.
  • Conduct hearing, vision, breathing, and EKG testing and record results.
  • Administer medications as directed and perform venipuncture and specimen collection.
  • Recognize emergency situations and intervene appropriately.
  • Promote professional growth and development by meeting continuing education requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or eligibility for certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or equivalent certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Six months of medical assistant experience or completion of a medical assistant externship required.
  • Working knowledge of ICD-9/10 and CPT coding and insurance procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to float to other clinic practices as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain good communications and positive working relationships.
