About the position

The Medical Assistant in Primary Care at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health plays a crucial role in supporting the examination and treatment of patients under the guidance of a physician or advanced practice provider. This full-time position involves a variety of clinical tasks, including preparing examination rooms, assisting with procedures, and maintaining patient records, all while ensuring a positive patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to rooms, take history and vitals and document appropriately in the EMR.
  • Assist the providers with examinations and/or procedures as requested, including giving immunizations and performing office diagnostics/treatments such as EKG, spirometry, and nebulizer treatments.
  • Documenting and billing appropriately in the EMR.
  • Clean exam rooms and equipment, performing sterilization procedures as necessary.
  • Keep exam rooms properly stocked with medical supplies, forms, and other materials as needed.
  • Triages phone calls from patients and communicates this information via the EMR to the providers, placing return phone calls as directed.
  • Complete pharmacy/patient refill requests as directed by the providers and complete prior authorizations for medications when required.
  • Perform office lab procedures, urine dips, and finger sticks, accurately documenting results in the EMR and billing for the procedure.
  • Prepare samples for outgoing lab when required.
  • Monitor vaccine supply and medical supplies for the office, placing orders as needed.
  • Maintain sample drug closet by organizing and properly disposing of all expired medications.
  • Assist with front office duties as needed, including answering phones, filing, and scheduling appointments.
  • Assist with monitoring the fax server when needed.
  • Comply with established departmental and organizational policies for attendance, punctuality, procedures, and safety.
  • Monitor the patient portal, directing questions/orders to providers to address.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) is required.
  • One (1) year of previous related experience or graduation from an accredited program within the last 12 months is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Ability to exhibit excellent customer service skills and maintain professional conduct.
  • Ability to complete work in an established timeframe and assist the team effort for the benefit of patients, providers, and fellow team members.
  • Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention procedures and safety precautions applicable for work in a clinical office setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, providers, and fellow team members.
