About the position

The Medical Assistant in Rheumatology at Allegheny Health Network plays a crucial role in supporting patient care and office operations under the supervision of healthcare providers. This full-time position involves coordinating examinations, treatments, and health care planning for patients, while adhering to established protocols and workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in coordinating patient care under the supervision of the healthcare provider.
  • Prepare and room patients according to standardized workflows.
  • Accurately obtain and document patient vital signs and information.
  • Assist in the administration of depression screening tools and complete annual wellness visit screenings.
  • Review, update, and screen medication lists in the EHR.
  • Pend orders for required screenings, prescriptions, or other orders based on approved protocols.
  • Perform back office testing following approved protocols and policies.
  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures, potentially serving as a scribe with additional training.
  • Provide follow-up with patients via their preferred method in accordance with provider instructions.
  • Notify patients of test results under the direction of the provider in a timely manner.
  • Prepare exam rooms for patient visits and ensure adequate inventory of medical supplies.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments per established policies and guidelines.
  • Accurately perform lab controls and equipment checks as assigned.
  • Administer and document medications in accordance with policy and safe practice.
  • Perform clerical office functions and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or 1 year of Medical Assistant experience or 1 year in a direct patient care role.
  • Experience with vital signs, injections, phlebotomy, and EKGs is preferred.
  • CPR certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Act 34, Act 33, and Act 73 background clearance certificates are required.
  • Certification from an accepted Medical Assistant certification body (NHA, AAMA, AMT, NCCT, AMCA) must be obtained within 120 days of hire.
