Medical Assistants play a crucial role in the healthcare system by performing a variety of administrative and clinical tasks that support patient care and ensure the smooth operation of medical offices. This position requires a blend of skills, including patient interaction, administrative duties, and clinical responsibilities. Medical Assistants are responsible for accurately registering and scheduling patients, managing office supplies, and ensuring compliance with quality assurance standards. They must demonstrate a thorough understanding of regulatory guidelines and maintain accurate records in accordance with state and federal policies. In addition to administrative tasks, Medical Assistants are involved in direct patient care. They administer injections, perform EKGs, conduct spirometry tests, and carry out phlebotomy procedures as directed by physicians. They also play a vital role in patient eligibility determination, utilizing programs such as Medicaid EVS to identify when referrals or preauthorizations are necessary. Effective communication is essential, as Medical Assistants greet patients, answer phone calls, and handle sensitive information with professionalism and confidentiality. The role requires a commitment to improving patient experiences through the demonstration of I.C.A.R.E. behaviors, which focus on integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence. Medical Assistants must be adaptable, as they may be assigned additional projects and duties as needed. This position is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift and move heavy objects, and involves exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Overall, Medical Assistants are integral to the healthcare team, ensuring that both administrative and clinical functions are performed efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately register and schedule patients, including printing necessary documents.
  • Maintain sufficient inventories of medical and office supplies in the office and exam rooms.
  • Process the ordering of clinical supplies in accordance with practice standards.
  • Complete lab requests, referral and health forms, and maintain logs as mandated by regulatory guidelines.
  • Administer injections, EKGs, spirometry, perform phlebotomy, and render therapeutic treatments as instructed by the physician.
  • Determine patient eligibility using programs such as Medicaid EVS and identify when referrals or preauthorizations are needed.
  • Answer and screen office calls, greet patients professionally, and project proper telephone etiquette.
  • Input accurate, complete, and timely data within the electronic health record system.
  • Obtain and document patient vital signs in the medical record.
  • Interview, triage, and prepare patients to facilitate smooth flow during medical examinations.
  • Assist providers in medical examinations and provide general assistance as necessary.
  • Demonstrate I.C.A.R.E. behaviors to improve the patient's experience.
  • Perform other projects and duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of clerical/billing experience in a medical office setting.
  • Experience operating multi-line phone systems, fax machines, photocopiers, PCs, credit card machines, glucometers, EKG machines, and other medical equipment as required.
  • CMA, RMA or AAMA certification preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR certification is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in Medical Interpretation if serving as a bilingual/multilingual interpreter.
