About the position

The Medical Assistant position at Kaiser in South San Francisco involves assisting in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a Physician or their designee. The role is essential in ensuring that patients receive high-quality care and that the medical environment is well-prepared for examinations and treatments. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for interviewing patients, measuring vital signs, and recording pertinent information in the patients' medical records. This position requires the preparation of treatment rooms and patients for examination, as well as assisting clinicians with patient care. In addition to direct patient care, the Medical Assistant will manage inventory by ordering and replenishing medical supplies and materials. They will also perform routine laboratory tests and may administer medications, including injections. The role includes scheduling appointments, performing clinical tasks, and completing necessary forms as required by the department. The Medical Assistant will be expected to maintain cleanliness and order in the work environment, ensuring that all instruments are cleaned, processed, sterilized, and checked as needed. Customer service is a critical aspect of this role, as the Medical Assistant must practice customer service standards defined by the Medical Center. This includes anticipating customer needs, responding promptly to alarms and patient requests, and facilitating the use of resources. Team commitment is also emphasized, requiring the Medical Assistant to be an effective team member who is flexible, cooperative, and willing to assist others. They will manage difficult situations constructively and act as a resource and mentor to new employees and students. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities, but it does require adherence to attendance policies and participation in departmental professional development activities. The Medical Assistant must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment, supporting a collaborative atmosphere.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients and measures vital signs and other pertinent information as required by department.
  • Records information in patients' medical records.
  • Prepares treatment rooms and patients for examination.
  • Assists clinician with care of the patient.
  • Inventories, orders, and replenishes medical supplies and materials.
  • Gives treatments and performs routine laboratory tests as required by department.
  • Schedules appointments, performs clinical tasks, and completes appropriate forms as required by department.
  • May be responsible for administering medications, including injections.
  • May be responsible for cleaning, processing, sterilizing, and checking instruments.
  • Performs computer data entry functions.
  • Performs clinical/technical skills specific to the department.
  • Practices customer service standards as defined by the Medical Center and specified department.
  • Anticipates the customers' needs and takes proactive steps to meet those needs.
  • Promptly responds to alarms and patient requests.
  • Facilitates the customers' ability to utilize resources.
  • Assures a clean, orderly, and functional work environment.
  • Acts as a resource and mentor to new employees, students, and other team members.
  • Participates in departmental professional development activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum six (6) months of experience or successful completion of Kaiser Permanente externship.
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Completion of a course of study consistent with the requirements for Medical Assistants as specified by the Medical Board of California.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend medical information.
  • Ability to effectively present information, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to use personal computer.
  • Medical Terminology Certificate or equivalent experience.
