The Medical Assistant role at Lowell General Hospital focuses on providing both professional and nonprofessional nursing care services under the supervision of licensed personnel. This position is essential for ensuring smooth patient flow in the outpatient setting, acting as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers, and supporting clinical operations and patient experience. The role requires a combination of clinical and administrative responsibilities, including patient monitoring, preparation for visits, and assisting with various medical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Control and monitor patient flow to maximize efficient use of providers and exam rooms.
  • Prepare medical records for patient visits, confirming accuracy with patient identifiers.
  • Provide high levels of customer service in all interactions with patients and families.
  • Assist with admitting patients into the hospital and facilitate their transition to inpatient units.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for provider visits, ensuring comfort and safety.
  • Determine fall risk and implement appropriate safety measures for patients.
  • Prepare exam rooms according to the needs of each patient's visit.
  • Assist providers and nursing staff with physical exams, treatments, and procedures as necessary.
  • Perform and record vital signs and review medication lists with patients.
  • Collect specimens and ensure necessary supplies are ready for provider use during visits.
  • Perform Point of Care Testing (POC) as ordered.
  • Assist in arranging diagnostic testing, surgery, and inpatient admissions under direction of the nurse or physician.
  • Support patient billing by ensuring accurate coding and documentation.
  • Scan outside paperwork into electronic medical records and process referrals and authorizations.
  • Maintain clinic rooms according to infection control policies and stock supplies as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and provide administrative support as required.
  • Act as a preceptor for training new hires and MA student externs.

Requirements

  • Completed MA education from an accredited program or graduated within the last 36 months prior to accreditation.
  • Medical Assistant National Certification from a recognized governing body.
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Two years of medical office experience (preferred).
  • Phlebotomy Certification (preferred).
  • Bilingual skills (preferred).
  • Experience with electronic patient record systems (preferred).
