About the position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will support the clinical services staff at Cameron County Public Health by performing essential clerical and clinical tasks. This role is crucial for maintaining medical and financial records, assisting with patient care, and ensuring compliance with health protocols. The CMA will engage with clients to gather health histories, administer immunizations, and manage laboratory specimen collections, all while adhering to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately document all time worked.
  • Perform clerical and clinical work for the Clinical Services Program.
  • Interview clients to obtain health history and immunization status.
  • Prepare and administer immunizations and treatments according to protocols.
  • Conduct data entry for client visits in electronic reporting systems.
  • Maintain and document medical records and reports.
  • Plan and schedule clinics in the department.
  • Document medically related notes in client records.
  • Perform screening laboratory tests and vital signs on clients.
  • Coordinate laboratory specimen collections with private and regional laboratories.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for clinical sessions.
  • Route abnormal results to appropriate medical staff with follow-up.
  • Assist in completing monthly reports and quality assurance reviews.
  • Make referrals to agencies for client medical needs.
  • Manage epidemiological data gathering for disease control.
  • Complete client refills and greet clients professionally.
  • Schedule appointments and order office/medical supplies.
  • Maintain records for Family Planning, STD, Prenatal, and Immunizations.
  • Answer phone calls and pull records for review by medical staff.
  • Follow up on pending laboratory results and transfer records as needed.
  • Update demographic and history at each patient encounter.
  • Prepare clients for laboratory work and assist during exams.
  • Complete laboratory specimen forms and maintain laboratory logs.
  • Keep supplies stocked and conduct monthly inventory.
  • Perform all lab duties including blood draws and quality assurance.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistants and maintain current certification.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and public health laws.
  • Good communication skills, including Spanish speaking ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work with confidential client information.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
