About the position

The Medical Assistant at KU MedWest plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient flow of patients through the healthcare setting. This position requires a commitment to providing exceptional customer service while facilitating examinations and treatments in a culturally sensitive manner. The Medical Assistant will contribute to patient care by preparing patients for their visits, performing limited procedures, scheduling diagnostic tests or consultations, maintaining patient records, organizing clinic and exam rooms, and managing supply and equipment inventory. Additionally, the Medical Assistant will assist physicians, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members in delivering high-quality healthcare services. In this role, the Medical Assistant will be responsible for accurately scheduling tests, obtaining necessary films and reports, and preparing laboratory specimens in accordance with established policies. They will assist physicians and nurses with special procedures and examinations as outlined in their competency checklist. Collaboration with the healthcare team is essential, as the Medical Assistant will help coordinate and implement patient care plans, which may include recording elements of patient history for clinical staff review. The position also involves electronic submission of prescriptions and refills to outpatient pharmacies, ensuring that all data collected for completed procedures is accurately recorded in medical records. The Medical Assistant will maintain medical records, ensuring that all required documentation is available and properly filed. They will also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of examination rooms, stocking supplies, and completing required logs for equipment checks. Clerical duties are also a significant part of this role, including greeting patients, registration, scheduling, pre-certification of tests and procedures, processing insurance forms, and preparing financial records. The Medical Assistant will perform vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures, documenting all findings in the medical record. This position requires the ability to perform professional, clinical, and technical competencies as assigned, with the understanding that duties may vary depending on the specific department or unit.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately schedules tests; obtains films and reports; and prepares laboratory specimens according to policy.
  • Assists physicians and/or nurses with special procedures and examinations as defined on competency checklist.
  • Collaborates with members of the health care team in coordinating and implementing plans for patient care; may record elements of the patient history for clinical staff review.
  • Electronically submits, calls and/or faxes in prescriptions and refills to outpatient pharmacies.
  • Ensures data collected for completed procedures is recorded on appropriate forms and in medical records.
  • Maintains medical records; ensures all required documentation is available in the medical record; distributes reports and correspondence; files, photocopies and processes forms related to medical charts.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms; stocks assigned areas and ensures par levels of supplies are maintained; checks and completes required logs and equipment such as refrigerator logs, eyewash logs, emergency/crash carts, suction and other required checks.
  • Performs clerical duties such as greeting patients; registration; scheduling; pre-certification of tests, procedures and medications; processing insurance forms; preparing financial records; answering phones; and entering ambulatory care charges.
  • Performs simple procedures as directed by the nurse or physician and as defined on the competency checklist.
  • Performs vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures and documents in medical record.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program or at least one year as a Medical Assistant or CCMA or NCRMA certification
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days
