About the position

The Medical Assistant at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will support the Health Services clinic team in providing care for ill and injured employees. This role involves a variety of tasks including clinic reception, patient intake, assisting with medical procedures, and maintaining clinic supplies, all while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with health regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and route patients professionally while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Schedule and reschedule appointments using electronic systems or paper as needed.
  • Field and route telephone calls, taking clear and accurate messages.
  • Assist in processing medical records into electronic health records.
  • Open, close, and maintain clinic procedures.
  • Obtain and document clinical data for patient rooming processes.
  • Explain tests and obtain informed consent for medical surveillance and voluntary exams.
  • Assist clinicians with exams and procedures, using sterile techniques as needed.
  • Fit and apply wraps, splints, and provide patient instructions under supervision.
  • Instruct patients in specimen collection and perform phlebotomy.
  • Perform various medical tests as ordered by providers and administer immunizations.
  • Support wellness initiatives such as flu clinics and health screenings.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and restock as needed.
  • Clean and sanitize patient care areas and process biohazardous waste.
  • Perform maintenance and calibration of medical equipment.

Requirements

  • Current California Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited program.
  • 2-4 years of experience in a medical office setting including medical assisting and receptionist duties.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience with phlebotomy and immunization skills.
  • Experience performing medical tests such as blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Certification or ability to become certified in CPR.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and handling of personal health information (PHI).
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 50 lbs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with UC, LBNL, and DOE policies and procedures.
  • Experience with Workers' Compensation processes and documentation.
