About the position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will support the clinical services staff at the Cameron County Public Health (CCPH) Clinical Services Program by performing essential clerical and clinical tasks. This role is crucial for maintaining accurate medical and financial records, assisting with patient care, and ensuring compliance with health policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately document all time worked.
  • Perform clerical and clinical work for the Clinical Services Program.
  • Interview clients and/or guardians to obtain health history and immunization status.
  • Prepare and administer immunizations and treatments according to CCPH protocols.
  • Conduct data entry for clients seen during clinic visits.
  • Maintain and document appropriate medical records and reports.
  • Plan and schedule clinics in the department.
  • Document medically related notes in client records.
  • Perform screening laboratory tests and vital signs on clients as needed.
  • Coordinate laboratory specimen collections with private and/or regional laboratories.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for clinical sessions.
  • Route abnormal results to appropriate medical personnel with follow-up.
  • Assist in completing monthly reports and quality assurance reviews.
  • Make referrals to agencies to meet clients' medical needs.
  • Manage epidemiological data gathering and analysis for disease control.
  • Complete client refills and greet clients professionally.
  • Schedule appointments and order office/medical supplies for the clinic.
  • Maintain records for Family Planning, STD, Prenatal, and Immunizations.
  • Answer phone calls and pull records for review by medical staff.
  • Follow up with pending laboratory results and transfer records as needed.
  • Update demographic and history at each patient encounter.
  • Prepare clients for laboratory work and assist with exams.
  • Complete laboratory specimen forms and prepare specimens for mailing.
  • Keep laboratory log up to date and stock supplies for clinics.
  • Conduct monthly inventory of supplies and pull records for scheduled clinics.
  • Perform all lab duties including blood draws and quality assurance of lab equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistants and maintain current certification.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and public health laws and regulations.
  • Good communication skills (oral and written) and Spanish speaking ability.
  • Knowledge of computer programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet).
  • Ability to work with confidential client information and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work with the public and understand public health laws.
