About the position

The Medical Assistant position involves providing a range of clinical and administrative support services under the supervision of a physician or podiatrist in a correctional facility. The role requires a valid Medical Assistant certification and entails performing various medical procedures, ensuring patient comfort, and maintaining confidentiality while adhering to institutional policies.

Responsibilities

  • Administer basic life support in emergency situations to patients and staff.
  • Use medical equipment safely.
  • Administer intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections and skin tests.
  • Administer eye/ear washes and prescribed medications.
  • Administer basic breathing treatments.
  • Remove casts, splints, sutures, and other external devices.
  • Change simple dressings and collect blood via capillary and venipuncture techniques.
  • Collect lab specimens and label them appropriately for evaluation.
  • Measure vital signs and conduct basic vision tests when indicated.
  • Perform point of care testing to determine a patient’s physical condition.
  • Demonstrate the use of healthcare appliances such as canes and crutches.
  • Attend to the physical needs of patients to ensure comfort.
  • Perform therapeutic interventions to assist patients in regaining or improving adaptive skills.
  • Explain treatment procedures and medical instructions to patients.
  • Identify patients with disabilities to ensure reasonable accommodations are provided.
  • Care for patients' personal property and assist during medical exams and treatments.
  • Observe, document, and report clinical symptoms and behavior, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Practice universal precautions to maintain infection control and report possible security breaches.

Requirements

  • Twelve (12) months of continuous experience within the last three (3) years in a similar role.
  • Current and valid Medical Assistant Certificate from an approved agency.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited provider.
  • Completion of a competency validation process as per Title 22, Section 70016.
  • Proficiency in the English language for effective communication.
