About the position

The Medical Assistant position at Ochsner Health involves providing individualized medical care to assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. The role includes assisting in the delivery of healthcare services, maintaining positive relationships with patients and their families, and ensuring efficient patient flow during visits. The Medical Assistant communicates with patients via phone and in person, documents medical information, and adapts care to meet the needs of diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the patient and provider throughout the patient visit.
  • Ensures the patient and provider are prepared for the visit.
  • Answers patient questions prior to leaving; prepares room for next appointment.
  • Provides excellent patient service through effective communication both over the phone and in person.
  • Completes appropriate documentation including patient registration if necessary.
  • Maintains required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training and credentials through personal professional development.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy and communication style.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; completion of a formal medical assistant training program preferred.
  • Experience working with and maintaining confidential information in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required; Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
  • Clinical knowledge and proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a formal medical assistant training program.
  • Medical Assistant Certification.
