About the position

The Medical Assistant at Abacus Dermatology is responsible for providing essential support in a dermatology practice, focusing on patient care, room preparation, and maintaining medical supply inventory. This role involves direct interaction with patients, assisting with examinations, and ensuring compliance with health regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule all surgical appointments and communicate with patients regarding medication, lab results, and tissue diagnosis.
  • Check all patient rooms at the start of the workday to ensure they are clean and stocked.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and document brief histories using the EHR system.
  • Assist physicians during patient exams and obtain necessary samples or supplies.
  • Answer patient questions and refer others to the physician as needed.
  • Clean rooms between patients, changing table paper and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Set up rooms for procedures, explain procedures to patients, and obtain informed consent.
  • Provide wound care instructions to patients after procedures.
  • Log in and out all pathology specimens and orders for lab work.
  • Transport used instruments to the maintenance area, clean and autoclave them.
  • Check rooms at the end of the day to ensure they are stocked for the next day.
  • Maintain inventory of medical and surgical supplies and place orders as needed.
  • Keep the nursing station organized and discard expired medications appropriately.
  • Call patients with biopsy results as directed by the physician.
  • Return phone calls to patients and pharmacies, providing advice or refilling prescriptions as directed.
  • Take photographs as needed and treat all patients and staff with respect.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in dermatology or a similar field.
  • Proficient in using Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • Experience with surgical procedures and patient care in a clinical setting.
