About the position

The Medical Assistant at Abacus Dermatology is responsible for providing support in various clinical and administrative tasks to ensure smooth operations within the practice. This role involves scheduling surgical appointments, communicating with patients about their care, maintaining medical supply inventory, and ensuring compliance with health regulations such as OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA. The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in patient care, assisting physicians during examinations and procedures, and ensuring a clean and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule all surgical appointments and communicate with patients regarding medication, lab results, and tissue diagnosis.
  • Check all patient rooms at the start of the workday to ensure they are clean and stocked.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and document their brief history using the EHR system.
  • Assist physicians during patient examinations and obtain necessary samples or supplies.
  • Answer patient questions and refer others to the physician as needed.
  • Clean exam rooms between patients, changing table paper and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Set up rooms for procedures, explain procedures to patients, and obtain informed consent.
  • Provide wound care instructions to patients after procedures.
  • Log in and out all pathology specimens and orders for lab work.
  • Transport used instruments to the maintenance area, clean and autoclave them.
  • Maintain inventory of medical and surgical supplies and place orders as needed.
  • Ensure the nursing station is organized and discard expired medications appropriately.
  • Call patients with biopsy results as directed by the physician.
  • Return phone calls to patients and pharmacies, providing advice or refilling prescriptions as directed.
  • Take photographs as needed and treat all patients and staff with respect.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Experience in a medical office or clinical setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Familiarity with EHR systems and patient documentation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Experience in dermatology or surgical settings.
