About the position

The Medical Assistant at Abacus Dermatology is responsible for providing essential support in a dermatology practice, focusing on patient care, room preparation, and maintaining medical supply inventory. This role involves direct interaction with patients, assisting physicians during examinations, and ensuring compliance with health regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule all surgical appointments and communicate with patients regarding medication, lab results, and tissue diagnosis.
  • Check all patient rooms at the start of the workday to ensure they are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.
  • Fill CRYO containers as needed.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and document brief histories using the EHR system.
  • Assist patients with disrobing if necessary and help physicians during patient exams.
  • Obtain samples and other supplies needed during patient visits.
  • Answer patient questions and refer others to the physician as necessary.
  • Clean rooms between patients, changing table paper and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Set up rooms for procedures, explain procedures to patients, and obtain informed consent.
  • Provide wound care instructions to patients after procedures.
  • Log in and out all pathology specimens and orders for lab work.
  • Transport used instruments to the maintenance area, ensuring safety standards are met.
  • Clean, wrap, and autoclave instruments appropriately.
  • Check rooms at the end of the day to ensure they are stocked for the next day.
  • Maintain inventory of medical and surgical supplies and place orders as needed.
  • Keep the nursing station organized and discard expired medications appropriately.
  • Call patients with biopsy results as directed by the physician.
  • Return phone calls to patients and pharmacies, providing advice or refilling prescriptions as directed.
  • Take photographs as needed and treat all patients and staff with respect and professionalism.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or physicians.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in dermatology or a similar field.
  • Proficient in using Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • Experience with surgical procedures and patient care in a clinical setting.
