About the position
The Medical Coder is responsible for accurately coding diagnoses, procedures, and treatments for a busy general surgery practice. This role ensures proper coding for billing and reimbursement, supporting compliance with insurance policies and maximizing efficiency in the revenue cycle. The ideal candidate has a strong background in medical coding, particularly in surgical procedures, and is committed to accuracy and adherence to all regulatory guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Assign accurate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes for all general surgery procedures and patient diagnoses.
- Collaborate with the billing department to ensure timely submission of claims and resolve any coding-related issues that impact reimbursement.
- Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, including HIPAA, and adhere to coding guidelines and standards.
- Analyze and interpret patient records and surgical reports to identify all billable services and procedures.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing accurate documentation and coding insights.
- Stay updated on coding changes, regulations, and best practices relevant to general surgery.
Requirements
- Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.
- Experience in medical coding within a surgical or general practice setting.
- Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and billing software.
- Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and excellent communication abilities.
