About the position

The Medical Coding Specialist will be responsible for reviewing and coding medical records, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and conducting audits to enhance the accuracy of coding practices. This role is crucial in the revenue cycle process, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare billing and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze medical records to assign appropriate codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Ensure accurate coding of diagnoses, procedures, and services rendered to patients.
  • Conduct regular audits of medical records for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Identify discrepancies in coding practices and recommend solutions to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, billing staff, and other stakeholders to resolve coding-related issues.
  • Stay current with changes in coding guidelines, regulations, and payer requirements.
  • Provide training and support to clinical staff regarding proper documentation practices and coding standards.
  • Prepare detailed audit reports and present findings to management with recommendations for improvement.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of coding policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or related field preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent coding certification required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in medical coding and auditing within a healthcare setting.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding guidelines.
  • Proficient in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
