About the position

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for overseeing clinical excellence, ensuring productive relationships with medical staff, and supporting the strategic planning and execution of initiatives at Intermountain and St. James Hospital. This role involves building relationships with leaders, stakeholders, and community partners to achieve desired outcomes, improve equity and health for caregivers and communities, and promote a positive work environment. The CMO will lead medical management, champion clinical process models, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards while fostering a culture of safety and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and ensure productive relationships with the medical staff.
  • Assure clinical excellence and support leadership in strategic planning.
  • Develop and implement clinical models for the future.
  • Create a great consumer and caregiver experience.
  • Improve equity and health for caregivers and communities.
  • Champion the Intermountain Operating Model and tiered huddle process.
  • Partner with internal and external leaders for cross-entity collaboration.
  • Deploy care process models and best practices to improve outcomes.
  • Work with the Chief Nursing Officer to enhance clinical outcomes.
  • Facilitate teamwork and shared goals among medical staff and leadership.
  • Lead and oversee medical management including credentialing and quality management.
  • Ensure execution of medical quality improvement and utilization management programs.
  • Promote a culture of Just Culture and safety among the medical staff.
  • Lead efforts around clinical performance and risk reduction.
  • Participate in the development of initiatives for physician accountability in documentation.
  • Oversee regulatory requirements and assist in surveys by State, CMS, and Joint Commission.
  • Act as Business Owner in developing provider service contracts.
  • Develop and monitor medical policies and procedures related to healthcare delivery.
  • Participate in strategic planning for trends in medical care and patient safety.
  • Integrate evidence-based medicine practices into patient care delivery systems.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certification in a relevant specialty.
  • Significant experience in clinical leadership roles.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations and compliance.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution in a healthcare setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic health record systems.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of population health management.
  • Experience in a multi-hospital system.
