Medical Director

About the position

The Medical Director at the American Red Cross is responsible for providing consultation, education, and oversight in transfusion medicine, ensuring the safe execution of programs and enhancing knowledge within and outside the organization. This role involves direct patient services, coordination of medical communications, and the development and implementation of medical policies and procedures. The Medical Director will also engage in research and provide leadership guidance to volunteers, contributing to the mission of saving lives and supporting the community.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical consultation in transfusion medicine, blood banking, and patient services to hospital customers.
• Maintain robust and supportive relationships with hospital customers.
• Provide continuing medical education on the safe and effective use of blood components.
• Direct patient service programs including therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection, and patient blood management.
• Direct the medical aspects of regulated blood center operations including collections and donor management.
• Participate in the development of procedures and policies on medical criteria for donor eligibility and safety.
• Serve as CLIA Laboratory Director for regulated collection activities and laboratories.
• Investigate concerns and complaints related to donor complications and recipient transfusions.

Requirements

• M.D. or D.O. degree with post-graduate training/specialization in blood banking/transfusion medicine required.
• Currently board certified or eligible in internal medicine, pediatrics, or clinical pathology.
• Minimum 10 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Experience in blood banking/transfusion medicine or blood center operations is desired.
