About the position

The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) for Diagnostic Ultrasound at the Columbia VA Healthcare System is responsible for performing a variety of ultrasound examinations to assist in diagnosing and treating patient medical disorders. This role requires independent operation of ultrasound equipment, adherence to safety and procedural protocols, and the ability to evaluate and prioritize critical procedures. The technologist will also be involved in training and supervising students and other staff in ultrasound techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all ultrasound examinations ranging from routine to highly specialized procedures.
  • Set up and adjust ultrasound equipment and manually maneuver the transducer for examinations.
  • Evaluate the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearrange priorities accordingly.
  • Maintain credentials and licensure, ensuring compliance with continuing education requirements.
  • Advise radiologists of significant abnormalities requiring immediate attention during examinations.
  • Participate in the training of physicians, students, and radiology technologists in ultrasound principles and procedures.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this position.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level in diagnostic ultrasonography services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Licensure or certification in ultrasound technology is strongly desirable for GS-6 or above.
  • Experience in training and supervising staff in ultrasound procedures.
