Wayne State University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Medical Investigator I to join the Office of the Medical Examiner / Forensic Pathology at its Detroit campus. This role is crucial in the investigation of deaths that fall within the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner in Wayne County. The Medical Investigator will be responsible for documenting and photographing the scene of the deceased, collecting relevant property and records, and ensuring proper identification of the decedent. The position requires supervision of the collection of remains by transport services and the arrangement for their transport to the morgue. In addition to scene documentation, the Medical Investigator will gather medical records from various healthcare settings, including hospitals and doctor's offices, as well as public agency records such as police and EMS records. This role also involves performing detailed searches of public records when the identity of the deceased is unknown and releasing bodies to funeral homes. The Medical Investigator will meet with families of the deceased, guiding them through the identification process and managing inquiries and complaints related to the Medical Examiner's cases. The position also includes assisting the Pathologist with the dissection of bodies and their organs, receiving bodies at the morgue, documenting intake, and maintaining autopsy equipment. The Medical Investigator will function as a liaison between the Medical Examiner's office, health and law enforcement agencies, and the general public, ensuring effective communication and collaboration in the investigation process.
