About the position

The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) plays a crucial role in performing diagnostic tests in a medical laboratory, providing essential data for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This entry-level position emphasizes accuracy, quality, and a consumer-centric approach while working collaboratively within Health First's clinical team.

Responsibilities

  • Performs clinical laboratory testing of various complexities in a timely and efficient manner using laboratory equipment and manual methods.
  • Complies with all Health First and HF Laboratory policies and procedures, as well as federal and state accreditation requirements.
  • Conducts quality control on laboratory tests to ensure accuracy and validity.
  • Assists lab supervisor in validating new tests, equipment, or methodologies.
  • Performs regular maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting on laboratory analyzers and testing systems.
  • Commits to departmental goals and continuously improves performance metrics.
  • Demonstrates basic computer skills relevant to job performance and uses electronic medical record (EMR) applications effectively.
  • Completes Annual Competency Assessments to demonstrate appropriate skill sets.
  • Manages time effectively to meet departmental staffing demands.
  • Communicates effectively with laboratory staff, external clinical departments, and healthcare professionals, adhering to AIDET in customer communication.
  • May obtain laboratory specimens through venipuncture and capillary puncture as needed.
  • Cross-trains in other laboratory departments or performs additional lab-related tasks as directed by the supervisor.
  • Complies with Health First I-Care values and communicates effectively with co-workers and management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Lab Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field as outlined by CLIA.
  • Medical Technologist licensure by the State of Florida in accordance with CLIA.
  • Must pass a color blindness test.
  • Proficient in required computer applications and able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Strong critical thinking, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology MLS(ASCP) or equivalent certifications.
  • 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
