About the position
The Medical Lab Technician at UMH-Clinton Hospital is responsible for providing accurate and timely laboratory test results to medical staff and other qualified personnel. This entry-level position involves performing a variety of complex clinical laboratory tests and procedures, maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment, and ensuring quality control measures are met. The technician will also assist in training new associates and may be required to collect specimens from patients.
Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and timely assays in various laboratory areas including hematology, coagulation, serology, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank, and microbiology.
- Conduct quality control measures and calibrations as prescribed in procedure manuals.
- Operate the laboratory computer system for order entry, result processing, and report generation.
- Obtain laboratory specimens from patients, including blood specimens from veins and arteries.
- Identify and correctly label laboratory specimens.
- Maintain and ensure the correct function of laboratory machines.
- Assist in training new associates in laboratory procedures.
- Collect legal specimens and testify in court as required.
- Unpack, date, and store laboratory supplies appropriately.
- Notify doctors of critical values immediately when they arise.
- Prepare various reagents as needed, ensuring proper preparation and storage.
Requirements
- Must have a nationally recognized certification or be eligible for certification as a Medical Lab Technician (MLT).
- Associate's degree in an MLT program is required.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory medicine is essential.
- Excellent communication skills are necessary.
- Ability to work independently and troubleshoot effectively.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts and take call as needed.
Nice-to-haves
- Previous MLT experience is preferred.
